Description

In 1540, King Francis I of France decided to extend his realm to the New World. The first French colony in the Americas was established at Cap-Rouge. From 1541 to 1543, hundreds of men and women came to create a new France, led by Jean-François de La Rocque de Roberval with the assistance of Jacques Cartier.
