Between 2000 and 2004, an event known as “We dig Sundays!*” put the spotlight on Quebec archaeology by giving people access to archaeological sites and allowing them to meet archaeology and museology specialists face to face. By the summer of 2004, the number of participating sites had grown to 42, representing 14 regions. The public’s response was so enthusiastic that the Archéo-Québec network decided in 2005 to expand the event’s scope to cover every day in August.

* A program to improve awareness about preserving and enhancing our archaeological heritage from a sustainable development perspective, “We dig Sundays!” received assistance from the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec, the Ministère du Tourisme du Québec, the Department of Canadian Heritage, Parks Canada, Pointe-à-Callière Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History, the City of Quebec, the City of Montreal, the Musée de la civilisation, the Quebec Association of Archaeologists and Pointe-du-Buisson Archaeological Park.
