Presentation: The ministère de la Culture oversees archaeological activities in Quebec, including research on the site of the Old Saint-Sulpice Seminary, rarely open to the public. The George-Étienne Cartier and Louis-Joseph Papineau houses, both of which are National Historic Sites managed by Parks Canada in Old Montreal, have not yet revealed all their secrets, some of which are still underground.

Description: This walking tour starts with a presentation of archaeological discoveries in the yard of the Saint-Sulpice Seminary (1684). The tour continues to the L.-J. Papineau and G.-É. Cartier houses, where the backyards hold evidence of these sites’ occupation since 1711 and the profound changes that took place in the east end of Old Montréal between the destruction of the city walls and the construction of railway stations.
