
16-Grosse Ile and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site of Canada
Grosse-Île, an island in the St. Lawrence near the town of Montmagny, is reached by boat from a number of places. Boats leave the south shore of the river at Berthier-sur-Mer and Lévis, from the north shore at the port of Quebec (Louise Bassin), and from Île d’Orléans at Saint-Laurent.

Presentation: A place of national historic significance, protected and presented by Parks Canada, this site commemorates the importance of immigration to Canada from the early 19th century to the First World War and the island’s role as the quarantine station for the port of Quebec from 1832 to 1937, as well as the tragic events experienced by Irish immigrants, mainly during the 1847 typhus epidemic.

Description: A chance to visit the Montmagny Migration Centre and attend a lecture by a Parks Canada archaeologist on the Grosse-Île quarantine station. A number of artifacts uncovered during various digs will also be on display.
